We were bound for Great Basin National Park. Remote and little visited, Great Basin contains a wealth of towering peaks and deep caverns, sparkling alpine lakes, glaciers and 3000-year-old bristlecone pines. We didn't stay long.

Exploring Great Basin National Park: Including Mount Moriah Wilderness

Exploring Great Basin National Park is a guide to both the national park and the adjacent Mount Moriah Wilderness. Although many visitors stay at the park for just a few hours, the purpose of this book is to encourage you to stay longer and explore the park as well as the surrounding Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. You can camp at one of the four campgrounds in the park, camp on the national forest, or stay at a motel or hotel in nearby Baker or Ely. If you are new to the area you should certainly take the tour of Lehman Caves and a drive up the Wheeler Peak Scenic Road.

Reid Celebrates Recognition of Great Basin National Park

Nevada Senator Harry Reid today discussed news that Great Basin National Park will be prominently featured as part of the "America the Beautiful" quarters line expected to debut next year and that the park will also be included in an upcoming public television documentary by noted filmmaker Ken Burns. The new Burns documentary is titled "The National Parks: America's Best Idea." During his early years in Congress, Reid worked tirelessly to establish Great Basin as Nevada's first, and still its only, national park.
